We started off our camping journey by piling on to the mini-bus and driving all the way to Edge Grove School. They were hosting our camping experience. What a nice thing to do!
Craig, our camp instructor was there to greet us. He was very warm and welcoming. The first thing we did was go over all of the rules. This is important, because rules mean safety! We then raised our Year 3 flag onto the flagpole and we officially kicked off our experience by putting up our tents.
Now, I don’t know if you’ve ever put up a tent before, but there are so many essential steps involved. There is unfolding, hammering, pegging and even angles are involved. It was a great experience!
The day then started with a variety of activities that had to do with survival in the wild. This included crash and carry, which was about a plane crash scenario, and shelter building. We also made survival pendants with slate and jute, using an ancient tool called a pump drill! It was difficult at first, but then I got the hang of it! All of the activities were so much fun, and very tiring.
After dinner, we unfortunately had to move indoors, as rain and a thunderstorm was coming. We were not going to be able to stay in the tents. It was a safety issue. I hope you understand! We moved all of our gear into the Year 3 classrooms and that’s where we ended up staying the night.
The evening was amazing, we played Kinball! This is a giant ball, in case you were wondering. It is so big that it can knock over a grown adult. I’ll tell you what….It actually did. Mr Morarji went tumbling down. It was hilarious!
The next day we had breakfast, and had some free time to play on the climbing frame, have a game of football on the pitch and even do some swimming. It was loads of fun!
I really enjoyed my very first residential from Buckingham Prep. Even though there were a few hiccups, I learnt a lot about myself and others in the class. I hope I wasn’t snoring all night!
Until next time,
