Citizens of the Future!

Posted: 30th January 2026

Last Monday, our Year 6 boys at Buckingham Preparatory School took part in a series of valuable workshops delivered through the Harrow Citizenship Scheme, designed to help young people develop awareness, responsibility and confidence as they grow more independent.

Throughout the day, pupils rotated through interactive sessions led by specialist agencies, covering important aspects of personal safety, wellbeing and citizenship.

TfL Citizens guided the boys through Underground and bus safety, using Oyster cards responsibly, and the importance of safe travel and journey planning — key skills as pupils begin travelling more independently.

The London Fire Brigade delivered an essential session on fire safety in the home, helping pupils understand risks, prevention strategies and what to do in an emergency.

Hope UK led discussions around health and wellbeing, including the risks associated with vaping, smoking and harmful substances, encouraging informed and healthy choices.

The Met Police Schools Team addressed serious topics such as county lines, gangs, knife crime, and the age of criminal responsibility, supporting pupils to understand consequences, personal safety and how to seek help.

The boys engaged thoughtfully in role-play scenarios, asked insightful questions, and showed great maturity when discussing these important issues. Opportunities like this form a vital part of our commitment to supporting pupils’ social development, safety awareness and emotional wellbeing.

We are proud of how our Year 6 pupils represented the school and embraced learning that prepares them for life beyond the classroom.
